Espresso to go

As she walked into the coffee shop, she felt the atmosphere around her go still. The coffee shop, though full of people, was completely silent. She looked around, unsure of how to react. It had only just happened the night before. the word couldn't have gotten around this quickly. As she turned her back on the crowd of staring coffee drinkers (didn't their mothers ever teach them not to stare??) to look in her bag for cash, she heard the crowd begin to whisper. She could still feel their eyes burning into her flesh. Like being in a spaceship about to crash land on the sun...He whole body burned and itched. Her legs wanted to run, but her mind told her not to. Her heart wanted for her to cry, but her body wasn't allowing it. She quickly left the coffee shop and got into her car.
"You were only imagining it," she told herself. "They weren't talking about you or staring at you. It was simply a coincidence." And for the first time since her sister died the night before, she cried with true hurt and anger as she pulled over to the side of the road and parked. She simply wanted to forget the whole summer and just get on with her life.
